Ben Sollee at the 930 Nov 1st

Ben Sollee starts his US tour here in Louisville at the 930 Listening room this Saturday. Ben has readied a tour only EP called "Something Worth Keeping." Here's what Ben has to say about the EP and things worth keeping:

"The beauty of people is anchored in imperfection; it is not that we are destructive but that we are ignorant to a better way. We dream big with even bigger costs. Furthermore, we learn the lesson daily that we don’t know what we have until it is gone. Combined, these two qualities are child-like but ever present.

When I look around I see a lot of things that are worth keeping: the mountain tops of Appalachia, family and community farms, art and music in schools, and, most of all, a government by the people and for the people. But how? The challenge that our leaders and us face is that we don’t know how to accomplish these goals. There are many eloquent ideas out there about renewable energy, educational systems, and governing, but realizing them means trying new things; which is daunting at least, and terrifying at most. As my generation takes the reins we should not sacrifice some qualities of this nation and the land in its boundaries to the wayfaring spirit of economy. They are important for Americans, our children, and the rest of the world.

These thoughts inspired these two new songs. But they are only songs…" - Ben Sollee

Paradigm Pink Floyd this Halloween!

Louisville Favorites Join Forces with Some of the City's Finest Musicians to Present the Music of Pink Floyd

This Halloween, Friday, October 31st, the Louisville-based post-jazz ensemble Paradigm will be donning a "musical costume" for their performance at Headliners Music Hall. The theme: Pink Floyd. A number of special guests will be joining the group throughout the night, including Teneia Sanders, Jamie Barnes, Daphne Luster, and Dave Chandler (Arnett Hollow, Zongo). Tickets for this 18-plus event will be available for $10 at Ear X-Tacy Records and ticketweb.com, and at the door for $13 on the night of the show. The concert will begin with a set by Paradigm at 10pm (doors open at 9), with the Pink Floyd presentation to follow shortly after.

Concert-goers are encouraged to sport their best and most creative Halloween threads, as a $150 cash prize will be awarded to the person who receives the most audience votes for Best Costume. Visual stimulation will also include video art by Louisville artists Aron Conaway and Hallie Jones, collectively known as Shoot the Messenger.

Paradigm previously hosted a Halloween show featuring the music of Radiohead, about which Paradigm keyboardist Brian Healey says, "It's almost two years later, and we still get positive feedback about that show." Healey adds, "Halloween is about having fun, and, for one night of the year, being anything or anyone you want. For us, a musical costume is the perfect way to step outside ourselves and join in the Halloween spirit. This year, we're looking forward to being able to share the party with some of our friends that we respect artistically as well as personally. We'll definitely be having just as much fun as the audience."

Paradigm blends modern jazz exploration with the raw power and sonic possibilities of post-rock. For the past year, the group has been supporting their 2008 Ropeadope Records release Melodies for Uncertain Robots with nationwide touring.

Sani Hanks presents...

The Louisville music and arts scene has for a long time needed someone to come along and breathe into it new life... the time has come and our savior has arrived. Sani Hanks, younger brother of the great Tom Hanks has helped inspire a concert and arts show series to revive the Louisville scene and bring an "underground" to everyone who desires such. Join in this celebration/tribute to Sani for his inspiration and devotion to reviving unity amongst the Louisville culture and it's people. Who knows, if he's not too nervous, you may even get his autograph...

a little background info on Sani:
Sani Hanks (1960 - ) - the younger brother of Tom Hanks. For most of his life, Sani has lived in the shadow of his older, more successful brother and has struggled to make an acting career of his own. One main obstacle that he has tried to overcome is the fact that he is illiterate and has trouble writing. He also, on occasion suffers from extreme social anxiety.

His filmography to date includes:

"ER" (3 episodes)
- "Breach of Trust" (2007)
- "Collision" (2007)
- "Friends or Enemies" (2006)

"The Wire" (2 episodes)
- "Safety Threat" (2008)
- "Undercover" (2007)

"Eight Legged Freaks" (2002) [victim #2]

"3rd Rock from the Sun" (1 episode)
- "My Mother the Alien"

Show this Friday to include the Kodiaks, Murals, Dude Plays Sax and Anton Mink at Skull Alley. Art will also be displayed by Eddie Santigo, Frank Martinez, Joshua Vance and Makeshift Clothing. Doors are at 7 and bring a crisp (or crinkled) 5'er to get inside.

Young Republic EP realease show at The Brick House

The Young Republic will be playing a show at the Brick House this Friday the 17th. They have recently come off a tour of the UK with the likes of Bon Iver and The Mountain Goats where the released an EP entitled Idiot Grin. The show this Friday will celebrate the US release of that EP and having had a sneak peek of the EP, I'm happy to say it's an awesome release! The band has recently relocated from Boston to Nashville which puts them in a prime location to trek up to Louisville to earn some new fans. Chris Miller, bassist, also has roots in Louisville so that'll hopefully keep them coming back to give us more and more. Also playing the show... Staging the Area and Josh Napier, show starts at 6pm.

The Young Republic's new EP, Idiot Grin will only be available at the show or online but be sure and pick up the most recent album, 12 Tales from Winter City available at iTunes.

Extra Media:

Check out this video from the infamous "Black Cab Sessions" across the pond (such an awesome concept):

The band had a session at Woxy this summer as well, hear it below:

Squeeze-Bot at the CBGB fest? You decide!

Local "Germantown Jazz" quartet, Squeeze-Bot has been entered in a contest to be a part of the Chicago Bluegrass and Blues festival. If Squeeze-Bot wins, (aside from a cash prize) they'll be asked to play along side legend David Grisman and musicians like the Avett Brothers and Ha Ha Tonka at this year's festival on November 22nd.

I know what you're asking... what can I do to make sure Squeeze-Bot makes it? All you have to do is vote online and vote daily! They are currently in first place but only by a small margin so I'm asking you to do your part to help out some of the home team win a spot in the big show.

Vote here, tell your friends and please vote daily. Thanks!
