After a positive response to Team Totoro's working class anthem BROKEN MONOCLES The group decided to produce a video for your holiday delight. Originally recorded for their summer 2012 album "Team Totoro Invites You To Enjoy Lazor Beats" the band decided to release the song early in support of the Occupy Wall Street Movement.

When asked if they were worried about a backlash to the song's strong theme, Team Totoro collaborator KY Jenny said "the song may be shocking, not nearly as shocking as what this country becoming. Our working brothers and sisters deserve a better life." Co-frontman Prep D said "That certain people are taking advantage of the rest of us isn't a theology, it's as certain as the sky is blue." M.C. Hijack said simply "A change is needed, by any means necessary."

The Deloreans - "Dandelion"

Today The Deloreans released to the world a video for their new song Dandelion, it is about about a girl who prefers Dandelions to roses. The group uses this metaphor to explore the idea of real and imagined happiness, is this really what would keep the girl content or is it only temporary. The song is a beautifully arranged waltz using acoustic instruments to convey a sense of sweeping lush melody. Although the band is known for their electric instruments used in a very classic way this song is a step in another direction, combining folk instruments such as acoustic guitar, banjo and ukelele, with classical elements such as a violin traipsing throughout. The song originally appeared on Louisville is for Lovers Summer 7" Series, the green vinyl accompanied their live show on the roof of Glassworks last month which they played with the lovely Scott Carney and Heavy Friends. Evergreen gets a shout-out from across the pond

The english language blog from Milan Italy, Premesso di Soggiorno, has recently posted an article about the mighty 1990's Louisville Band EVERGREEN.
The article focuses on the band's party rock phase and demise, looking closely at their highly regarded Hi-Ball 7" release "pant's off" and their self titled LP, recently re-issued on Temporary Residence.
It's nice when the talent in our town gets noticed else where around the globe, even if it's a band that is no longer with us. The article is well worth reading, and for that matter, Evergreen is well worth searching out.
Evergreen was one of my favorites as a youngun and "pant's off" was the first (and only) ringtone I purchased from Itunes.

As school starts back I am reminded that the year of 2011 is nearing it's end, and with that we start to look back at what music made it so special. So these are my favorites for the first half of 2011.

Cults- 'Cults'
I had been waiting for this album since the first single was released last summer, "Go Outside" was the perfect summer anthem and Cults continued to impress me right up to this full length.

Panda Bear- 'Tomboy'
Animal Collective are one of my obsessions, and Panda Bear is my favorite part. Even if this album wasn't as perfect as it turned out to be, I probably would still be gushing.

Jeff The Brotherhood- 'We Are The Champions'
This record was executed really well, it narrowed down what we love most about rock and roll, a roaming guitar and wild drums.

My Morning Jacket- 'Circuital'
A great return to form for My Morning Jacket, they went back to their roots, but still kept what keeps them a forward looking band, the future is always ever present with these guys.

Tune-Yards - 'W H O K I L L'
When I first saw Tune-Yards two years ago they were just starting out and Merrill Garbus was using a looping pedel to create different sounds. Now, she has a whole band and this has helped her ability to create even more texture within her music than before.

Toro Y Moi - 'Underneath The Pine'
Chaz Bundick, this guy is full of it in a really great way his second album was a perfect step forward. He included new ideas but still remained close to what makes Toro Y Moi so special.

Tyler, The Creator- 'Goblin'
Many people dislike OFWGKTA, but I think they are really great. They provide a microscope on american youth culture, some things we would like to ignore they shove right in our face. This kid may be a little jerk, and he is the first to admit he is no role model.

Lykke Li- 'Wounded Rhymes'
I wouldn't say this was much of a step forward for Lykke Li, but I'm not sure she needs to move anywhere just yet. Her second album is great and she gave me just what I have come to expect, energetic songs about being young.

Kurt Vile- 'Smoke Ring For My Halo'
In 2009 Kurt Vile made his presence known, with the release of two great albums. His forth release is full of epic pop songs.

The Deloreans- 'American Craze'
Sometimes an album surprises you, I live for this moment and I'm so thankful that a band from my hometown could provide that feeling for me this year.

BUT WAIT THERE IS MORE!
2K11 isn't done yet, and I can't wait for Girls 'Father Son Holy Ghost', and Gauntlet Hair's debut in the last half of the year.

for awhile I have been thinking about a 'best of the first part of 2011 releases' post, and now that we are sliding into the second half, I guess it's time to start looking back at 1ST HALF OF 2011 BEST RELEASES!
Some of my favorite albums this year are remixes for some reason (Gayngs & Wugazi), and the good news is remix albums are usually free these days (and we give you the links)! and, no surprise, my favorite releases of 2011 are local releases, I think some of our local albums are blowing national releases out of the water... The Deloreans, Soft Cheque, and Fervor albums are must haves!

One of our contributing writers Dylan, has a new album out today on bandcamp.com. it is his first release and is a 7 song EP of Bob Dylan covers. i didn't know this, but Dylan's full name is Robert Dylan Greenwood, and he is named after Bob Dylan. So it makes since that he should pay homage to the man in which he is named after. I was named after a gravestone in a germantown cemetery, so I suppose I will one day pay homage to that man by making a similar gravestone, but hopefully not for awhile.

Review: Maiden Radio "Lullabies" LP

Louisville's favorite ladies folk trio, Maiden Radio, has a new album coming out in a couple weeks called 'Lullabies' and is a collection of covers and traditional classics originally recorded for band member Julia Purcell's new baby.
The album is a quiet 8 songs recorded in Cheyenne Mize's attic complete with creeks and cracks that add to the theme of lulling little bitty babies off to twilight.
The album starts off with an Odetta classic "Sail Away ladies" (without Odetta's howling high notes..) that will make the most sarcastic southern ex-pat nostalgic for the southeast.
The album continues with one of the best renditions of "lavender blue" I have heard, and I have heard plenty, followed by a very true to form Gillian Welch song from 20001's Time, "Dear Someone".
The album ends with the traditional ''Hush Thee My Rowan" that would leave the listener wanting more, if he or she was still awake, as putting the listener to sleep is the ultimate goal, and these ladies did a pretty good job at this.

The Album 'Lullabies' is the first release on Daniel Martin Moore's "Ol Kentuck" label and will hit the streets in 2 weeks.

Maiden Radio's album release show will be on August 5th at Uncle Slayton's at 7pm, and an instore at ear-x tacy on August 9th at 6pm.

Review: Scott Carney & Life And Times @ Zanzabar

Wax Fang hasn't played out in awhile. That might be why Scott Carney has been playing solo events lately. Tonight he opened for Life and Times @ Zanzabar, and just by hearing him, you almost don't realize that he isn't playing behind a full band. Looping multiple guitar sounds over top of each other to create a full mural of texture, the epic sounds we are so fond of with Wax Fang began to arise from this one man and his guitar. Scott Carney is an amazing guitarist, and the full weight of his gift is clearly visible as a solo artist, though I must admit I am excited to see what he has in store next month when he hits the stage with The Heavy friends at Glassworks (8/19 8pm). Scott Carney is a man who enjoys music and sharing it with others, which is apparent when he is performing, and it is always a treat to experience his talent no matter what moniker he plays under.

Honestly I do not know much about Life And Times, I was told they come from Chicago or DC, or both, and internet searches did not land much of a relevant result. I suppose that's a risk you take when you go for a commonality in a band name. I'm sure Luke Skyywalker had similar trouble starting out too.

Speaking of blasts from the past, From the first chords in the first song from The Life and Times set I was transported back nearly 2 decades to the early nineties when monster bass lines and math-rocky drums ruled the 7" vinyl release sections of local record stores. and it wasn't just the band that brought me back to 1993, the crowd that gathered to the front of the stage were also reminiscent of that time when indie rock reigned supreme; there was a girl with purple hair and a boy wearing goggles and a white sport coat. But none of this is to say I didn't enjoy it, because I did, especially watching the small but enthusiastic crowd. My friend Danny said "I checked my watch to make sure I was still in this Century.." It was noticeable that Life And Times where taking a cue from influential heavy rock Indie bands of the early nineties, but seemed to be taking cues from all the right bands. I would describe the band as a mixture of the Tar/J awbox split 7" static and the Jesus lizard 7" inch box set Lash (both released in 1993). both great EPs BTW, and both teeming with powerful bass and guitar chords and rough yet cozy vocals, also very prominent in Life And Times set.

They played well, and sweaty, and the small crowd at Zanzabar seemed to enjoy both sets regardless of the differences in sound and style. as did I.

Summer Heat focuses on modern sexuality. Curator Joey Yates states "Summer Heat will serve as a sexual journey for the viewer allowing the gallery goer to explore their own sexuality through the works in the exhibition."
The opening reception will also hold "For The Love LOT x SoS Street Art Consortium" a Hip Hop live arts presentation featuring Louisville DJ, DJ Fluid aka Yao Money will DJ and Jalin Roze.

Review: Mucca Pazza Headliners 7/7

Mucca Pazza came to Headliners on thursday night, they played the show with another Chicago band Schwinntonation who seemed to be very enthused to be there, proven by the musical lesson we received about intonation, which ended up being the definition for tonality. They used different parts from bikes to execute their soft looped sounds. It was a slow performance and was a strange lead up to the main event.
Mucca Pazza starts the show in the middle of the crowd, with their horns and hats running through the audience getting everyone ready for the party that was about to begin. The show is a mixture of performance art and raging birthday party, with cheerleaders and "the only marching band with a violinist" played two sets between which they spent some time at the bar or sauntered outside for a minute and when they had determined that the crowd was ready for it they came back for their second set.
This was my first Mucca Pazza show and I was amazed by the energy held by these 20+ people all captivating the audience. The dancing was contagious and it felt like the party could last for days but when it was over the band simply left the stage and went right out the side door, nothing special or crazy just simple and intimate.

Review: Bill Callahan @ The Cave 7/6

Last Weds, Bill Callahan, of Smog fame, played in front of a packed sweaty crowd in a small man made cavern under a hill on Lexington rd.
Louisville Artist Mike Ratterman and his wife Annie hosted this small show of about 200 people in the limestone brick cavern under their home that some believe was first made to haul Cholera victims safely to Cave hill Cemetery for burial.
The show was promoted by Ryan Davis of Sophomore Lounge and Ratterman, both of whom decided to keep this show quiet due to the limited space and notoriety of the headliner.
the show started with Austin band Hidden Rituals, who formed in November 2010 and are touring in support of their new self titled album.
Bill Callahan, who is touring in support of his 2010 novel "letters to Emma Bowlcut" and his 2011 LP Apocalypse, began releasing records under the name Smog in 1990, and under his own name since 2007.
By the time he hit the stage with 2 friends, the ground water dripping on the audience had turned to steam and the crowd was a wet hot mess that could care less about spooky dark wet atmosphere and was completely delighted at his intimate approach amplified by the natural echo produced by the vaulted stone ceiling.
Callahan played guitar and sang for about an hour and was accompanied by an electric guitar and small drum set. and although the 20' x 70' cavern had only four 40 watt bulbs and was too dark to see the band, the setting was unique and intimate and suited the voice and personality of this indie mainstay perfectly.
I spent some time outside, as the heat was a little much at times, and noticed the audience spanned from young college folks to older family types that only shows the reach Bill Callahan has after 20+ years on stage. this 4th event at 'The Cave' was good time for all, and hopefully there will be more events to come, perhaps in the fall...

The song is 'Gold Teeth' from the last album. This new video of an "old" song is being released to help promote our upcoming album to be released in November on Karate Body Records. Our first single from that album will be released next month. Then, in September, we will be playing the last of the Louisville is for Lovers Summer 7 inch series on the glassworks rooftop on 9/16 (with The Gallery Singers), during which two more whistle peak songs will be released. The Pixies play Louisville 11/9

Some religions believe that god can only hear prayers when they come from large groups of people. This might also apply to The Pixies, who will announce tomorrow that their next tour will consist of playing in cities that they have never played before, answering the prayers of thousands of Pixies fans across the US.
The Doolittle Lost Cities tour will begin on October 27th hitting 19 cities in 26 days, stopping in Louisville on Nov. 9th @ The Palace.

Review: JEFF The Brotherhood Mag Bar 6/19

Jeff The Brotherhood came to town last Sunday night at Mag Bar, the show started off with Louisville LoFi rockers K TRANZA and personally being new to the local scene I am more familiar with bands that play in California than someone from my own beautiful state, strange I know. Given this they reminded me of the youthfulness of Wavves and the smooth pop feel of Girls, I loved it.
Next up was the first Nashville act Cy Barkley, this dude rocks! Bringing back the soul of punk music, something strangely missing from the LoFi scene today. It is a feeling I miss, and one I hope is coming back (I never believed that punk was dead, it just needed some recovery time) good job Cy on representing all the bands I grew up with in a respectful way, you would make Minor Threat proud I’m sure.
JEFF The Brotherhood was the last to play, these guys have a great stage presence. I loved the theatrics they employ, such as back lighting and fog machines it made my night. When a band shows that they love performing by including different visuals on stage it makes me feel like they care that the audience enjoys every part of the show and I appreciate that. The new album We Are The Champions is phenomenal and certainly on my list of best albums this year. From the first song “Hey Friend” the guitar is right on; spacey and grandiose like all great guitar albums, these guys are here to impress the listener, and why not they come from a musical family their father is songwriter/producer Robert Ellis Orrall who also helped them start their record label Infinity Cats. Kudos to Mag Bar for the venue it was a great night.

Review: Giving up/Putting out cassette

I like Giving Up. not that I know too much about Giving Up besides a handfull of moments here and there over the past year, but I am a fan. I am somewhat unacquainted with Putting Out, but The DIY record label 'Sophomore Lounge' describes these two as follows:
PUTTING OUT is a right of passage. A junior in highschool realizing it's time to jump on the band wagon, let his or herself be taken to a new realm of physical engagement, or on the other side of that coin, one can let his or herself go completely, and feel like he or she has become a worn-in trampoline of degeneracy. Similarly, GIVING UP can be an act of submission and degradation, or it can be a positive liberation from oppressive values instilled within oneself. GIVING UP and PUTTING OUT are two actions that go together like moonstone and rose quartz.
I'm not sure if there is that solid of a connection between the two, I've defiantly Given Up on the idea of getting a chance to Put Out.. But this is either here nor there.. the real connection between the two is the new Cassette split release of Giving Up and Putting Out.
I instantly liked Giving Up because it reminded me of the Boyfriend/Girlfriend pop/punk bands of the late 80's and early 90's like Small Factory, Superchunk, and Black Tambourine (if you don't know, find out). Similarly I Like Sophomore Lounge, for the same reason. they tend to stick to tried and true heart-crushed pop punk rather than jumping on the band wagon of whatever glossy pop is in favor at the moment. I suppose that is why this new release is on the format of cassette tape with the lost art of the bedroom door sized poster.
This release is a 24 minute, 7 song lovely trainwreck dominated by Giving Up with 3 solid tracks reminiscent of the 90's lovesick releases by the indie label Simple Machines. The opening track "Armatage Shanks" hits with crashing drums and harmonies that remind me of a young Second Story Man and keeps going strong to the end of side A.
Similarly, the Putting Out offering is reminiscent of an earlier Giving Up release, Web, or even latter recordings of Throbbing Gristle; distorted drums strewn with samples of talking, screaming, and other noises that somehow converge into something pretty.

In the dozen years Louisville is For Lovers has been bringing the best music from Local bands, I have never asked for help, what ever cuts and losses I took, I took alone, but after a succession of hits over the past few weeks, I find myself stuck.
Two weeks ago we had our first show in the SUMMER 7" SERIES on the Glassworks rooftop with The Bad Reeds and Workers with a free 7" record to everyone at the door. It was a great night despite the looming rain that kept a lot of folks home, and it got new music from local bands onto some sexy yellow vinyl.
This series is supposed to have a show every month through the summer with the next one on JUNE 24th on the Glassworks Rooftop with Second Story Man and Adventure. It is an ambitious series, maybe too ambitious, that celebrates local music as well as the timeless art of Vinyl, and for just $10 a show you get both. Unfortunately vinyl costs a fortune as well as playing at such a unique venue such as Glassworks, and after several financial hits I fear we may not be able to continue. On June 1st, Brett Dennen played at Headliner’s. Two months ago, I had never heard of him. However, as luck would have it, a friend assumed I’d like Dennen and gave me his latest cd: Loverboy. I’ve listened to it every day since. Luck intervened again last night, when a friend invited me to catch his show.

I’m totally fascinated by Brett Dennen. I know everyone talks about the way he looks, but how can you not? He looks like a kid. A sweet, apple pie, Opie-faced kid! How can this “kid” write such poignant songs about love, longing and heartbreak? Whomwould dare break the heart of this angelic-faced boy, who tweets things like “aw shucks!”

Healiners was packed. Dennen obviously appeals to people in every age group and I was happy to fall into the middle of the demographics last night. When his set started, I was a little worried that I would be disappointed. I had fallen in love with Loverboy and there was always the possibility that he wasn’t going to live up to my expectations.

Well he did not disappoint! A lot of what I assumed was right: Dennen comes across as very shy and soft spoken. There wasn’t a lot of conversing with the audience. But then we didn’t come to hear him speak; we came to hear him sing. And man can he sing!

Dennen sings with his whole body. In person you aren’t so much fascinated with his baby-face, as with his amazingly long legs. He’s all limbs and his limbs are moving all the time! He’d throw his long arms out and the audience would exult! He would wiggle his hips and the crowd would wiggle right along with him.

He sings barefooted, which did not surprise me. If you watch closely (which apparently I did), his toes are constantly working, gripping and searching the small Oriental rug he stands on. I couldn’t help but think “here is a guy who prefers to read books over Nooks or Kindles, because he’s extremely tactile and likes to touch and feel things.” And Dennen does “feel things.” He feels them with his soul. He pours those feelings out in his songs and he shares them. The best part being that then you (the listener) can then also feel them. They are real, not manufactured like so many songs today. I’m so tired of listening to music and thinking “their voice doesn’t even sound real, and the music is so over done I can’t even decide what type of instruments are being played!” This is not the case with Dennen. His voice is real. He sounds the same in person as he does on his CDs. His voice is unique… you find yourself trying to find someone to compare it to: last night I got Paul Simon with a hint of Tom Petty. But really, his voice is the voice of Brett Dennen! He does not need to be compared to anyone.

At that show, Dennen was accompanied by four musicians. And for his first encore, Dawes joined his band and brought down the house! This was a big change from the last time Dennen came to Louisville. According to my companion, at that time, he played with just himself and a guitar. I was bummed, when I heard about that show. I would have like to have known about Brett Dennen when he was just a boy with a guitar. But then, Loverboy would not disappoint … for his second encore, Brett Dennen WAS just a boy with a guitar and he “rocked me to my soul!”

Dawes opening for Bright Eyes June 7th @ Iroquois

Early last year I was turned on to a band called Dawes; the album "North Hills" was a grower for me but once it hit, I was a happy camper! I got the chance to see them at the Newport Folk Festival last year in Rhode Island and they have a powerful live show that shouldn't be missed.

Their new album "Nothing is Wrong" has an official release date of June 7th so this is somewhat of a record release show. As they are opening for Bright Eyes and not in their hometown, I can't imagine we'll be treated with what My Morning Jacket gave us earlier this week but Dawes with Bright Eyes will be a very nice treat for a tuesday!

2nd Annual SqueezeBot Prom

My actual prom was horrible. Thanks to the boys (and gal) in SqueezeBot, I might have a chance to do prom right. Long time 37Flood favorites SqueezeBot will do prom right Saturday, June 11 at 8 p.m. at the Swiss Hall, which banjo-player Mick Sullivan assures me is where your prom SHOULD have been.

If you haven't caught this unique quartet yet they are worth renting a tux for. The band consists of Todd Hildreth (Java Men) on accordian, Mick Sullivan (Fire the Saddle, Slow Charlestown) on banjo, Meg Samples (Deloreans, Louisville Leopard Percussionists assistant director) on drums, and Brandon Johnson holds up the low end on the tuba, although rumor has it he will have help with that task from a special guest.

Tickets are $20 for a couple or $10 stag. And, yes, there will be a king and queen, so dress to impress.

SqueezeBot also has a weekly gig at the Nach Bar. This will be the fifth year they have played Sundays in the summer at the Nach Bar. The shows are free and run all summer.

So, find a date and hope she (or he) doesn't start dating your best friend days before, which is what happened to me at the prom I will attempt to erase completely from my memory on June 11th.

Los Angeles Documentary filmmaker Michael Feld, and former MMJ drummer Chris Guetig have teamed up to produce a 30 minute doco about Louisville's favorite export playing at the Yum! bucket in october 2010, and this film will be available exclusively in the Circuital deluxe box set that hits shelves on 5/31.

WFPL stands behind the cancelation of SOA

As the public outcry against the cancelation of 'State Of Affairs' picks up, WFPL pushes back with a comment on their Facebook page today. "our local programming continues and will grow, is you will hear int he[sp] coming weeks, but change is a part of that growth." LPM vice president Todd Mundt continued with "While some listeners enjoyed the show, we also had a clear mandate for change from our audience. Since the change, we've received a number of compliments for the replacement program. We celebrate what we've done before, but it was clearly time for a change."
Well, it seems there is also a clear mandate to save local programing, and preserve the small portion of a public voice we have left in local radio, as there is a grass roots campaign growing to bring back SOA and to have more of a say in local programing.
Paul Carney, Creator of the 'Bring Back State Of Affairs' Facebook page, posted "I think a lot of people don't understand what the change is leading toward. We see things disappear right after they're celebrated for a fund drive, we see an uptick in snippet coverage, and we see more national programming . . ."
As we are supporters of local programing and the belief that we should have a say in it, we will continue to post about this discussion, and hope you will share your comments about local programing and the loss of SOA.

Review: The Pains of Being Pure at Heart in Bloomington 4/29

Last night I took a field trip with some friends to see Twin Shadow and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart in Bloomington. The majority of the trip consisted of cupcakes and chatting, as we drove into Bloomington we witnessed some interesting sites, a real live camel (my favorite animal) and 30 goats on a hill; I felt these were signs that the night would be interesting…I was right. We got to the venue (Rhino’s) and find out it is all ages, which means two things: no alcohol, and 12 year old children; both of which we were not prepared for.
The first band went on at about 9pm they were a local band called Weakness; the music was over processed punk with the vocals turned all the way up. If they stick with it they definitely have potential to be a good band. The lead singer was jumping around like Iggy Pop, which could be awesome but they were no Stooges. Next was our main event Twin Shadow who put on a fantastic show, it was energetic and the crowd really enjoyed it. They played some of our favorites including "At My Heels" and "Forget", George Lewis seemed to really enjoy playing, hopefully they will stop in Louisville soon. After a short break between sets, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart took the stage to finish the night. I was pretty excited to see these guys, their newest album Belong came out in March of this year, and I loved it. If you haven’t checked them out go for it don’t let the name scare you, they make some great pop music.
Remembering that this is an all ages venue, my friends and I are surrounded by young kids who happen to be some of the more entertaining dancers I have seen in my life, naturally we can’t help but laugh a little when they nearly knock us out with their flying elbows. Looking back it was cute, we have all been there right? It ended up being a memorable night for everyone. I’m glad I ventured into the world of the north for the show, The Pains of Being Pure at Heart and Twin Shadow are amazing bands, and I hope next time they make a stop in Louisville.

We reported last week that the radio program State Of Affiars hosted by Julie Credence had been canceled by WFPL. The public radio station announced that although they have canceled the show, they would keep Julie Credence on staff. We have just learned that Julie has left WFPL.
Last week we mourned the loss of State Of Affairs, today we mourn the loss of the talented radio host. As local radio quickly becomes homonogised & syndicated, I hope one day soon there will be a realization in the necessity of local programing. But by then it may be too late.

Review: Beach Fossils 4/22

A small band from Brooklyn called Beach Fossils took over Zanzabar last Friday with the help of Seattle's Craft Spells and Louisville's Nzambi. The show started at 9pm with Nzambi playing first opening with an energetic electronic set, although the band was stoic on stage the crowd was getting pumped for what was coming. Craft Spells took the stage next and people enjoyed it, although the lead vocals were a bit off, I think most of that was due to sound which didn't seem to get fixed before the guys took the stage. The set was fun, and I am intrigued to hear more from these fellas. Beach Fossils finally got on at about 11pm and after having my ears blown out from the previous sound issues I was relieved to hear the calm pop tunes I have come to expect from them. Everyone was really getting down and having a great time, and a friend who came with me said it was definitely a favorite on her list. I had a great time, and kudos to Zanzabar for being a great venue!

Review: Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Phantom Family Halo EP "The Mindeater"

when I first heard that Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and Dom Cipolla (Phantom Family Halo) were working on a record together, I thought it was such a clash of sound that it might not meld nicely. But the more I thought about it, it seemed odd that it hadn't happened sooner. The two most prolific song writers in Louisville that have been operating and collaborating with other musicians for years had never crossed paths before. And although their sounds are very different from one another, the two do present an other worldly and ethereal quality both vocally and lyrically.
The first 2 tracks from the 'Mindeater' EP are acoustic and lean more in the Bonnie "Prince" Billy world, with departures into Dom's patented tremolo voice and erie keyboard chorus'. And even though they tend to be passing the spotlight back and forth to each other rather than melding together, the formula works, painting a vivid picture of men tortured by their own minds as well as the world around them (a theme both are familiar with). On the second track, 'Roki For Now', Will and Dom proclaim "my eyes were wide, full of sin. knock at the door, I'm a crazy man. I opened it up and you came in."
But it's the last two tracks that make this album a must have. The 3rd track is an explosive 8 minute cover of The Everly Brothers "Wonder If I Care As much" showing the full strength of this alliance with powerful psychedelic guitar and drum solos bleeding into a chorus of them both singing at full tilt that would indeed make the Everlys proud.
The EP ends with "Suddenly The Darkness", an infectiously catchy folk tale that takes us back to the Palace years. With warnings about sin and retribution and a chorus that will climb in your head and refuse to let go, you will be humming this song for weeks guaranteed: "when darkness comes your way, you know to stay away. you have got break your self free, it's the only way to be. you have to stay in the light, and say goodbye to the night.. Suddenly the darkness is coming for you!"
'The Mindeater' EP will be avialable in an edition of 1000 colored vinyl. If you are a fan of either of these artists, grab it fast.

Editorial: Goodbye State Of Affairs

Last Thursday Julie Kredens hosted "State Of Affairs" for the last time. After 14 years the local call in show got the axe by WFPL radio, suspiciously right after the spring membership drive.. and perhaps we are to blame.
When we call in and pledge donations we are asked what our favorite programs are, and the ones that get the most name drops are in the clear. The ones we may forget, are in jeopardy. Now, I don't always enjoy the topics on State Of Affairs, but I always appreciated that the program existed.
At one time, public broadcasting was seen as a public trust, where the issues of the public were voiced, and the opportunity to bridge the gap between the people and the public leaders was available. These days more and more TV and radio stations are going the syndicated route, and the local public voice is preempted for nationally and internationally produced programs.
State of Affairs allowed Louisvillians to speak with our mayor and city officials on a regular basis, as well as teach us about our own city history. Louisville is such a unique town, and SOA allowed us to get to know some of the amazing people that help make Louisville unique like Bob Hill, David Inman, and Wild and Wooly video's Todd Brashear.
I have Learned a lot from SOA, and I am ashamed to say, I didn't really realize it until it was gone.
Lately I have been getting annoyed by WFPL rebroadcasting the same program several times a day (or over and over all weekend in the case of A Prairie Home Companion.. I don't know what it is, but I just don't like that show). And the syndicated programs I do enjoy like Radio Lab, have so few episodes, that just get replayed over and over. SOA had new material everyday. I'm sure it was more expensive to produce than to just pick up a syndicated program, but I believe it was necessary. how quickly we slide into a singular global identity, long is the road back.
Julie, I've told you before, you are a talented person, and I have no doubt what ever you do next will be a success. State Of Affairs gave a voice to the city, and I thank you for all your work. You will be missed.

Around 11 or so at Zanzabar on Thursday May 5th, the Pass (as DJs) will be hosting a Cage the Elephant After party. $5. The invite stats ''THE PASS and SUPER SPECIAL GUESTS (that were not allowed to announce but....yea its gonna be insane, guaranteed. You dont want to miss....''
We can only guess who this may be..

The Pass and Cage the Elephant play at the Louisville Waterfront at 8 and is free with a pegasus pin.

Louisville, KY's very own avant-garde/experimental trio, SOFTCHEQUE will be playing @ Ear X-Tacy tomorrow Weds 4/20 @ 6pm, for the release of their highly anticipated new album, "Misericord" that is only available on Vinyl.

Deloreans photo contest winners!

You may have read that for their release of American Craze, The Deloreans held an art contest, with really fun prizes! their LP came with paper dolls of the band, and they asked everyone to display the dolls in fun poses and send in the pictures.. we did some, and we even placed! here are the 3 top winners:

Phaedra J won 3rd place with her photo of the band climbing a pair of breasts, from her mammogram scans. The Deloreans will be showing up at her place to play her a song in her own living room and will share a beer or 2 with her!

4/18 Corporate tax doggers protest

On Monday at 3:30pm at the Louisville main Post Office, the local chapter of MoveOn.Org will be organizing a protest against large corporations who continually doge taxes, while the government plans bigger financial aide cuts for programs that could help the economy, public organizations, and folks in need.
the MoveOn.org press release explains:
"While vital government services get cut, corporations like GE are making huge profits, but paying no federal taxes. So, on Monday—Tax Day—in Louisville, and at hundreds of events across the country, we'll gather outside the headquarters and local offices of the biggest corporate tax dodgers to deliver tax bills from the American people. We'll demand that our leaders make them pay up, instead of cutting billions from programs that would create new jobs, drive economic growth and help the needy and our nation's children."

the protest is monday, 4/18 at 3:30pm at the main post office (1420 Gardener Lane)
