In a press release circulated earlier this morning, by Vice-President Gary Sampson, WCHQ 100.9 FM will cease all broadcast operations on December 31, 2019, including on mobile applications, FM radio broadcasting, and online streaming.
WCHQ Community Radio began in 2010, founded by Kathy Weisbach, as a streaming station supported by a volunteer staff of DJs and show hosts, and eventually expanded to FM broadcasting, still run by volunteers from the community.
WCHQ is the only Louisville radio station that broadcasts 100% local music, with a library of over 4,000 local artists totalling over 44,000 songs.
Sampson cited mounting operation costs and lack of community support for closing doors at the end of December.
