i'm sure Andre 3000 is locked away in his room right now feverishly working on a pantie melting response.
go listen to this whirlwind epic. you will never be the same again.

Removador Debuts Lydia Burrell

Yim Yames' record label, Removador Records and Solutions, released the debut album of producer Alexander Smith, under the moniker Lydia Burrel. I haven't heard the album but My Morning's Jacket's frontman is known for championing great music by under appreciated artists.

Here's some of what the press release said:

The album is a juxtaposition of richly detailed electronic production and his earnest voice. Aside from recording and production assistance from Yames and another friend, Ben Mundane, the collection of songs is a DIY affair, entirely the product of Smith's creation.

Smith had been writing and performing music since high school. His interests led him eventually to pursue a masters degree in music theory and composition from University of Louisville... He has spent the last eight years building, tuning, and maintaining church pipe organs. "It's stimulating to work with your hands and satisfying to play a part in how an enormous and complex instrument sounds," says Smith. "I think it's helped me to understand and appreciate the craftsmanship and process of building things."

You can download an mp3 and order the album here.

Steilberg Teachers Concert

This Monday the teachers at Steilberg String Instruments in Buechel will put their world-class talent on display for a good cause. If you're not already aware of the awesome talent that exists down in Buechel now is the perfect time to see it for yourself.

Guitarist Craig Wagner (Liberation Prophecy, Java Men) is easily the best player in the state. Former Fire the Saddle bandmates Mick Sullivan (SqueezeBot) and Joe Burchett (The Mandlebrots) will be there. Perhaps I can talk them into doing a few Fire the Saddle tunes for old time's sake! Bassist Lee Pucket (Murali Coryell, Boogie Juice), Charlie Riveria (The Outfit), and violinist Katie Raymond (Bourbon Baroque, Music Theatre of Louisville) will also be featured. The teachers will cover the likes of the Beatles, Chick Corea, and much more.

Seating is limited but tickets are only five dollars and the money goes towards a great cause. Mick and Joe are part of Starduck Charities. 100% of ticket sales from this concert will go to refurbish the rec room at St. Joe's Children Home on Frankfort Ave for their 40 full-time residents. You can also find Starduck Charities at the duck pond at St. Joe's Picnic to make a donation this August. The show is Monday at 7:30.

Cabin: Review/Preview

It’s amazing how much unsung talent there is in this city. Shows that should cost 30 bucks with the now mandatory 15-dollar “convenience” fee don’t sell out at 7 or 10 dollars. I have a feeling another one of those shows is upon us. This Friday, tomorrow, Cabin celebrates the release of their wonderful new CD, Among the Rectangles and Changeable Parts at Headliners Music Hall.

As I mentioned in a previous post, their newest CD grabs you from the first listen. How can it not? Lead singer and principal songwriter Noah Hewitt-Ball’s voice commands attention and the instrumentation that surrounds his voice can’t help but take you to another place. Cabin’s lineup has changed considerably over the years, but the current band features Sarah Weilder on violin, keys, and vocals, Dave Chale on drums, and Billy Lease on bass with Noah doing his thing on vocals and guitar up front.

Cabin has taken a long hiatus since their last album and you can tell they have poured themselves into this latest effort. The listener gets the feeling that a perfectionist was at work creating these songs. Cabin’s melodies are catchy enough to draw you in, but it’s only the starting point of the Cabin experience rather than the end-all and be-all.

The tunes are ethereal in nature, which, for me, is a sign of good music. Something that can grab hold of your imagination and take you somewhere you’d like to spend some time is worth cherishing. Cabin’s latest CD, Among the Rectangles and Changeable Parts, has that power.

I don’t want to define or box in the music by drawing comparisons to other artists or by giving you a “review” of my favorite tracks. Instead I invite you to listen to the album, experience it for yourself, and be your own judge. You can hear the new album in its entirety at the band’s website. You can also stream their performance from last week’s live lunch at the WFPK website. As you can tell from that performance, Cabin is able to recreate the magic they took years crafting in the studio on stage.

So do yourself and this city a couple favors this weekend by going to the CD release show at Headliners and picking up this CD. Support local music; not only because it’s local and because it’s music, but because it’s good music that deserves your support. Support Cabin.

Tickets are $10. Doors at 8, show at 9. If you can't make the show CDs are available at Ear X-tacy or here

Nappy Roots - New Album, Free Performance

The area's best-known rap group has a big day planned for us tomorrow. They will be playing a free in-store performance at Ear Xtacy the same day that their new album, In Pursuit of Nappyness, hits record stores.

The Grammy-nominated act is based out of Bowling Green, but has plenty of connections to our fair city (does the skyline on the album cover look familiar?). In Pursuit of Nappyness is the group's fourth major release. They already boast more than 5 million records sold worldwide! There is also a Nappy Roots mixtape available for free download at their website. The performance is @ 6:00 and is free!

Big Weekend at the Southgate House

If you've never made the short trip up to Newport, Kentucky's Southgate House this might just be the weekend to do it. It is a great venue and this weekend it offers up two great shows.

Saturday four of Cincinnati's best folk/bluegrass/Americana acts join up to create a great bill. The show is a CD release party for Magnolia Mountain. The Tillers, The Hiders, and The Strange High Drifters will be there in support and to tell you the truth I like these acts just as much if not more than the headliners. The Hiders especially excite me. Headed by former Ass Pony's frontman Bill Alletzhauser, they are certainly a band to keep an eye on. This show represents a coming out party for good music from our neighbors to the North. Show starts at 8:30 and tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

Sunday night the Southgate House welcomes back Blitzen Trapper, who toes the line between prog-rock and Dylan-esque folk. I'm kind of late to the party on these guys but look forward to seeing them in this great venue, maybe I'll see you there! Show starts at 9:00 and tickets are $12 in advance or $15 at the door.

review: Damien Jurado at 930 6/10/10

Last night i was in new Albany getting things ready for THE ROCK N ROLL BALLET (which you should go to tonite at 7 at the NEW ALBANY AMPHITHEATER) and realized one of my favorite musicians, Damien Jurado, was playing at the 930 Listening Room, so i jumped on the Honda CX500 and raced to smoketown to catch the tail end of the show. i maybe missed the first half of his set, but the second half was very satisfying. it seems he played his new album, Saint Bartlett (which is awesome, go buy it, or steal it) from beginning to end, and then played some juicy slices after. one song, Diamond of The Sea, he said he just wrote, and wanted to play it, even though the band wasn't that familiar with it. i jumped to the iphone and recorded it, unfortunately the iphone fuzzes out at peak sound, but the song is amazing, and if your a fan, give it a listen.
but the best part of the evening for me was meeting Jurado and his Lovely wife. they are spending this tour following the tour van in their car together, very sweet. at first i thought maybe Jurado was a little annoyed with me, but he talked with me for a half an hour, so surely he wouldn't have done that if he was hating on me. he was really funny and dramatic, and has a sarcastic sense of humor (like me) so i'm sure onlookers were quite amused as we harassed each other over everything from which weather is best, and which cities suck worse.
for a guy who keeps his personal life close to the chest, he was very open about his life and what he hopes for his future. i only recently found out he wasn't a bachelor (damn), and when he mentioned he had a 10 year old kid, i was shocked. he talked about how he hates touring (after 10 studio albums, this is his first time in Louisville) and loves Seattle and yelled to the crowd that i was wrong for liking Oregon. when i mentioned i ran a record label and was getting killed by illegal downloads, he said he didn't care if people stole his music as long as they were listening to it. for a guy who barely tours, i was surprised by that, but he has a great catalogue of music, so go nuts kids, you have permission (my favs include "i break chairs" "on my way to absence" and "the ghost of David"). he said he is solely supported by his music but wouldn't like to get as popular as My Morning Jacket, as he loves to disappear when he wants too.
we talked about growing up and he was shocked that i hadn't seen my first naked girl until i was in high skool, and said he stole his first car at age 12 (an impala). he looks like a scary fellow you wouldn't want to meet in a Seattle alley, and apparently he is a badass too, but a very nice guy. his music is raw and heartbreaking, which i suppose could only come from someone who has been through it all, which it seems he has. all in all it was nice evening, and two girls helped me get a fan pic for this post -thanks Scott! (yes, the girl's name is Scott)-
if you aren't familiar with Damien Jurado, pick up his new album, and if he ever plays louisville again, you'll see me there.

Cabin is Back!

It's been five years since Cabin released their last first full-length album and now they're back! Cabin hasn't even played a show in the area for years but the silence will break with their performance Friday afternoon on WFPK's Live Lunch.

Cabin celebrates the release of their long-awaited CD, Among the Rectangles and Changeable Parts, next Friday at Headliners. If you're like me and can't wait that long, you can head down to Ear Xtacy where the CD is already available. You get a copy of the first CD with your purchase. If you already have it, just pass it along to another fan of good music.

I haven't had the CD long enough to give it a proper write up but I'm already in love with it after one listen, which is a real rarity for me. I can't wait to hear/see these songs live! Expect to hear more about Cabin here and, hopefully everywhere, in the near future.

Forecastle Sweetens the Deal

First there was the announcement of Saturday's headliner, the Smashing Pumpkins. Now Cirque Berzerk has added their hats into the ring with eight performances throughout the weekend.

From the press release:
It's been called everything from "a circus on acid" to "French burlesque meets Sweeney Todd". Cirque Berzerk's unique flavor of adult psychedelic vaudevillian tomfoolery joins Smashing Pumpkins, Widespread Panic, The Flaming Lips and over 100 other artists at this year's Forecastle Festival in Louisville, Kentucky July 9, 10, and 11.
From stilt walkers to aerialists to punk rock clowns to pro riggers, Cirque Berzerk works together as a cohesive unit to produce visions of sexy fiery burlesque, dramatic flight and vaudevillian tomfoolery.

SqueezeBot @ the Nachbar - This Sunday Every Sunday

Louisville's only accordian-banjo-tuba-drums quartet will be taking over one of Louisville's hippest bars every Sunday from now to Labor Day (except the first Sunday in August). This will be the fourth year SqueezeBot has held this weekly gig at the Nachbar. If you haven't caught them before they are definitely a good time, not to mention incredibly talented musicians.

SqueezeBot features Todd Hildreth (Java Men, Liberation Prophecy, Todd Hildreth Trio) on accordion, Mick Sullivan (Fire the Saddle, Town Criers, the Slow Charleston) on banjo, Brandon Johnson on Tuba, and Megan Samples on drums . While the mix of instruments is odd the choice of tunes can seem even stranger, although you get the feeling these guys know what they're doing. SqueezeBot has been known to cover everything from Charles Mingus to Boy George and promise to bust out some new arrangements from the likes of Chick Corea and Jefferson Airplane, among others.

Admission is free. They usually play three sets between the hours of 8 and 11. They'll be on the back patio unless it rains, then they go inside.

Cheyenne Marie Mize: Review and Preview

I caught Cheyenne's in-store performance at EarXtacy last night. A beautiful performance by a beautiful woman. She was supported by Saredren Wells who just released a CD on the louisvilleisforlovers label. Also supporting Cheyenne and getting a few songs of her own was Joan Shelley whose new CD will be available for the first time at Friday night's Glassworks Rooftop Show. Joan is in Maiden Radio with Cheyenne, has filled in for her at Arnett Hollow gigs, and like Cheyenne is also a beautiful woman making beautiful music. I'm also looking forward to this release after getting a taste last night. Friday night's show is $8 at the door or you can run down to Ear Xtacy and get tickets there today for $6. Doors @8pm, show starts @9. If it rains the show will be on the first floor. Do yourself a favor and make it to this show and pick up both CDs while you're there!

Roman Candle, Dangerbird at The 930 Art Center 6/4 FREE

way back in high skool, i daydreamed of moving to chapel hill NC, the capitol city of indie rock in the mid nineties. superchunk ruled the skool, and birthed one of the strongest indie labels to date, the unmatchable MERGE RECORDS.
that gushy pop is still alive and well, and will be attesting to that fact on June 4th when ROMAN CANDLE plays at 930 (not the listening room, but the Art Center, where metal/wood sculptor Daniel Graham will be showing). Dangerbird is also playing.
FAQ:Friday, June 4, 2010 / 8 p.m. / Doors at 7 p.m. / All ages / Limited Seating / Free! / In conjunction with J Daniel Graham’s gallery opening
Daniel Graham will also be showing work on june 11th in New Albany, during the Rock N' Roll Ballet (feat. Whistle Peak and The Deloreans). also free.

Forecastle Represents!

Forecastle has become a music festival that Louisville can be proud of. If I had any criticism of the past years' lineups it was the lack of local acts at the show. I realize they won't draw in the out-of-towners but now that the out-of-towners abound, J.K. and company have come around to my way of thinking. This year's local and regional talent will have their own stage and damned if they won't hold their own.

Local institutions Heine Brothers Coffee, LEO Weekly, and SonaBlast Records present the Bluegrass Catastrophe at the North Stage. Here is the list of artists in order beginning with the ones I'm most excited about and ending with the ones I'm not familiar with:

Wax Fang
Arnett Hollow
The Ravenna Colt
IamIs
The Fervor
Whistle Peak
Lucky Pineapple
Maiden Radio
Broken Spurs
The Pass
Dangerbird
The Commonwealth
Paul K. and the Weatherman
Frontier(s)
Parlour
Brett Eugene Ralph's Kentucky Chrome Revue
The Children
Straight A's
Adventure
Yard Sale
23-String Band
Scanners (Dr. Gonzo & Nacirema)
The Deloreans
Six White Horses
Nerves Jr.
Scott Mertz
