A few months ago, Ron Whitehead was commissioned by the city to write a poem about Louisville. Ron came back with "Louisville: Sweet City of My Dreams" That poem is set to be unveiled this Saturday at the FiveOTwo artist party at the new Green Building at 732 East Market Street. Ron's poem has been printed by fiveOtwo and will be available at the show. A photograph I took of Ron was picked to be a part of the poem poster so I am super stoked.
There will be live music by Ron and his new band Southside and music by spun tunes by DJ Jason Clark. Food/Hooch is said to be catered at the event.

Five0Two exists to support Louisville artists in producing artwork that expresses their love for Louisville.
Over the past nine months we’ve collected some great work - and we want to show it off for everyone to see. If you love Louisville, art, and a party, come to a place where you can do all three at once.
This Friday is a big day for Lucky Pineapple with the release of their new CD, "The Bubble has burst in Sky City." The release will be accompanied by an in-store appearance at Ear X-tacy and a release party at the Glassworks building.
The Ear X-tacy performance starts promptly at 8pm. The Glassworks show will be on the first floor and Cumberland Brews will be on site pouring magnificent beers with proceeds benefiting OVCE. Doors are at 9, and Bloomington's own Push-Pull will be opening for LP at 10pm with DJ Narwhal and DJ A. Bell spinning before, between and after the bands.
Both shows are all ages. The release party show at Glassworks is $3 and free with receipt of purchase of "The Bubble has Burst in Sky City."
With winter right around the corner this Wednesday is the last WFPK Waterfront Wednesday show of 2008. WFPK has organized a hell of a line-up for a finale. Info about the artist below from the WFPK website.
John Mann Band- 6pm In his twenty-seven years, John Mann has veered both near and far from his native western Kentucky. After going to college in Lexington, Mann moved for a brief period to San Diego, before returning to Kentucky and making the move to Louisville.
With an interesting musical heritage (Mann’s cousin is former Sun Records artist Carl Mann, who had a hit in the fifties with an up-tempo reworking of the pop standard, Mona Lisa), Mann has tried to keep his music planted in the present with an always keen eye to the past.
In December of 2004 John released his second album called Hands in the Pavement, which was a favorite on 91.9 WFPK. References to Hiatt, Dylan, Van Morrison, the Band, Cash, and Muscle Shoals-among others are often coined in describing Mann’s crafting of songs. Mann is also highly sought after as an accompanying guitar player in many local bands, most notably as a full time guitarist/harmony singer with Louisville legend Tim Krekel; he has also played with Danny Flanigan, Hell’s Half Acre, and Ten Months Later.
With the release of his latest effort, Evening News, Mann and family recently relocated to Nashville, Tenn., where he’ll continue writing, recording and touring.

-------------------------------------- Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles- 7:30pm Something of a one-man mixture of the Cramps, Beck’s early indie records (circa One Foot in the Grave), and the soundtrack to O Brother Where Art Thou, singer and guitarist Langhorne Slim offers a sardonic, modern take on traditional folk, country, and blues. Fancifully dubbed “the bastard son of Hasil Adkins” in some of his early press releases, Langhorne Slim is in fact a Pennsylvania native who resettled in Brooklyn after his graduation from the State University of New York at Purchase.
After a self-released demo garnered some local and online attention (as well as a semi-regular gig as the opening act for indie novelty outfit the Trachtenberg Family Slideshow Players), Langhorne Slim signed with the indie label Narnack Records and released his first EP, Electric Love Letter, in March 2004. The more varied and band-oriented full-length When the Sun’s Gone Down followed in the spring of 2005. Much touring ensued over the next year, including support dates with Lucero and Murder by Death, with drummer Malachi DeLorenzo and upright bassist Paul DeFiglia (aka “the War Eagles”) in tow. In 2006, Langhorne Slim signed with the larger (though still not major) label V2 Records, which released the all-new EP Engine in September of that year, as the singer was finishing recording his second full album, produced by Josh Ritter’s keyboardist, Sam Kassirer.

-------------------------------------- Paul Thorn Band– 9pm The first thing you notice is The Voice, unique and distinctive, the voice of a man who has walked a long, hot span over dusty Mississippi country roads. At turns soulful, raw, melancholy, brazen, funky, circumspect, serene, brooding, and mutinous, the voice expresses the range of human emotions, from forlorn grimness to incandescent optimism. And after repeated listens, you realize that his is not merely the voice of a poet but also of a merciful prophet, a summation not unjustified. Those who follow the career of Paul Thorn believe he is both.
His newest CD is A Long Way From Tupelo, a collection of songs which once again illustrates Thorn’s versatility and authentic connection to the music of the Mississippi heartland: blues, country, gospel, rhythm and blues, and rock ‘n’ roll. Thorn excels as a musical storyteller. Maybe, given his background, he just can’t help it. His songs are conduits for that gritty part of the South where beleaguered wisdom is as likely from the bottom of a bottle of Johnny Walker Red as it is from the pulpit of an old country church. And the latest Paul Thorn CD remains true to form.
Here are some photos from last night's concert on 4th street with Arnett Hollow, Peter Searcy and Cabin. Last night was Cabin's last performance of the year due to the band going back into the studio to work on a new record so if you missed them last night, you're gonna have to wait a bit longer to see them again. All in all, the bands were all great but the sound wasn't so swell. What do you expect for cramming a stage on a narrow street between two high rise building and covering it with a glass lid.
I'd also like to preface the photos below by letting you know the lady in the photo to the right must have though I was with one of the papers as she demanded that I take her picture... I gratefully obliged! Enjoy.

As you all know, this weekend starts the Ryder Cup here in the lovely Derby city. Even if you're not a fan you can at least appreciate how nuts the city is about hosting this event (I've looked at the signs for 4 years now...) and you can be happy about what it is doing for the city's economy.
Billed as part of "The Cup Experience", this Saturday (09/20) Cabin, Peter Searcy and Arnett Hollow will play a show down at 4th Street Live with the admission being free while you proudly sport your Ryder Cup commerative pin (ahh, just like a Derby event.)
The show starts at 7:30 with Arnett Hollow and is followed by Peter Searcy at 8:30 and Cabin at 9:45. This should be a great show to get a good local sampling of music into the ears of some far away travelers and locals alike. I know the wife won't let us miss Cabin and we heard a rave review about Arnett Hollow's performance at the St. Hildegrad festival last weekend and can't wait to catch the show.
This coming Sunday down at Skull Alley Grampall Jookabox, PWRFL Power and Louisville's own Chemic will be playing an all ages show for a tiny $3. This will be the first show presented by Buzzgrinder.com and they don't plan on stopping with this one...
Our friends over at Backseat Sandbar have reminded us of an event we totally planned on checking out and it somehow slipped our mind to tell you about. September 13th (today) starts the Ear X-tacy sidewalk sale and it runs through the 14th. It's a great time to pick up on some great deals as well as some album promo decorations that are past their expiration date for appropriate promotion (still great for basements though!) If that wasn't enough, local label Noise Pollution presents new albums from prominent artists in the city, Venus Trap and Minnow and they're playing an in-store at 5pm. Go get a hold of some great deals and check out some awesome original music!
