Boycott Ticketmaster

With summer Festivals and concerts quickly approaching, now would be a good time to stand up for yourself and stop taking it in the rear from this evil company. Stop PAYING 5$ to print your tickets out using your own ink and paper.

I don't really have any answers (maybe Eddie Vedder does) but I do know one thing you can do to save some money, and stickit to the man! If you plan on attending the My Morning Jacket show this August, do yourself a favor and head down to Slugger Field and buy your tickets from their box office. You can pick them up for the face value of 33.50 and save around 8$ per ticket (they actully print them for free too!).

Since I brought him up, here is some Eddie for you...

The mere continued existence of Ticketmaster completely baffles me. We've gotten to a place where we digitally distribute music for free, we've killed DRM, we've replaced print publications with blogs, we leak our own tracks to get, we've got myspace and youtube and and we've even got brownpapertickets.com. Selling tickets on your webstore that most bands of any size have these days is easy enough. The only benefit I ever saw to having Ticketmaster was the promotion value in having an easy way of finding shows....now we've got JamBase and countless music blogs for that. The expense cannot be justified and artists need to recognize that most fans wish to support them by paying for their shows...they shouldn't be subjected to these fees going elsewhere. At an $8 service fee, that is nearly the cost of one of the albums that the fan might have otherwise bought at the show. Touring is where money is made...it needs to be done smarter...

Ticketmaster fees are out of control, and outdated. The thing is, if we just stop giving them our money they will have to change or someone will replace them. I started a campaign to organize a mass boycott here: http://www.thepoint.com/campaigns/boycott-ticketmaster . I really think this has a chance to work. Please spread the word. Let's bring this monopoly down!
