Today is the day, and if you are like most of Louisville, you have been waiting for a long time.  "Circuital" hits the shelves, and has been slated as much more than an album, the deluxe box set (at a whopping $80-$110) is a Custom box with lenticular cover that includes:

MMJ-in-Louisville Documentary premieres 5/31

Los Angeles Documentary filmmaker Michael Feld, and former MMJ drummer Chris Guetig have teamed up to produce a 30 minute doco about Louisville's favorite export playing at the Yum! bucket in october 2010, and this film will be available exclusively in the Circuital deluxe box set that hits shelves on 5/31.
Feld says of the film One Big Holiday "this grassroots film tells a story about the unique relationship
between a band, and an emerging American city that has its own distinctive heritage and blossoming indie music scene."
Guetig and feld have been nice enough to share with us the production photos from the film "One Big Holiday" as well as the official tailer for the film below.

5/8 Mixtape monthly at Tyler Park

There is a group that meets once a month at Tyler Park for a pot luck and to exchange mixtapes.. it's called mixtape monthly... and it's open to everyone. all you need to do is bring a potluck and a mixtape (of 8 songs of more) and take it to the park at 5pm. it's not clear if mix CDRs are acceptable, but i'm guessing it is. this month's theme is sexXXy exchange.

4/18 Corporate tax doggers protest

On Monday at 3:30pm at the Louisville main Post Office, the local chapter of MoveOn.Org will be organizing a protest against large corporations who continually doge taxes, while the government plans bigger financial aide cuts for programs that could help the economy, public organizations, and folks in need.
the MoveOn.org press release explains:
"While vital government services get cut, corporations like GE are making huge profits, but paying no federal taxes. So, on Monday—Tax Day—in Louisville, and at hundreds of events across the country, we'll gather outside the headquarters and local offices of the biggest corporate tax dodgers to deliver tax bills from the American people. We'll demand that our leaders make them pay up, instead of cutting billions from programs that would create new jobs, drive economic growth and help the needy and our nation's children."

It just doesn't feel like derby in Louisville without a few things, Thunder, BROADWAY CRUISING, and black out drunkenness.. which leads me to another Derby must have: LOVE JONES.
Friday May 6th at Headliners, $12, 9 pm sharp. The Love jones website says "People never seem to believe us when we say we're playing an early show. We can't tell you how many people show up during our final song, and didn't believe we'd start at 9 pm.... because they used to come see us at Tewligans and we didn't start till midnight, or later. Well, please believe us. We are hitting the stage at 9:15. This isn't Tewligans, and we aren't 25 years old anymore." Noted.

The Swell Season & Mr. Joe Manning 5/29

My Mother Loved "Once". She frequently recites the whole romance between the two main actors Glen Hansard (from the Irish band, The Frames) and Marketa Irglova (classically trained Czech pianist and vocalist) and how it mirrored the movie storyline except that in reality they broke up. and she doesn't even think it's gross that he is sooo much older than her (that's an 18 year difference folks, no joke). Mom reminds me that their first album (self titled) are of love songs written by each other, about each other while they were in LOVE, and that's how the best love songs are written.
i have never seen the movie, or heard anything They have done, but i have met Glen a long time ago, and he was very cordial. and i once had a crush on an Irish girl who loved The Frames. but that's about it. but i'll be there on Saturday at the Brown Theater with my mom, and she'll be the loudest member in the Audience.

Joe manning will be opening. you know him, you love him. imagine that luscious voice in that velvety room....

New Albany Public Art Project opening reception 6/11

Louisville's neighborhood to the north, NEW ALBANY, is turning 200 soon, and is celebrating by commissioning area artists to create public sculptures that relate to New Albany's rich history (seriously, there's some history there).
Artists include Brad White (of The Pine Club fame), John King (of the infamous fame), Valerie Fauchs, Leticia Bajuyo, and Daniel Graham. on Friday JUNE 11TH from 6-9 pm there will be festivities, tours, and the like. starts at the Carnegie Center (201 East Spring Street).
UPDATE:THIS EVENT HAS BEEN MOVED FROM 5/21 TO JUNE 11TH AT 6 PM BEFORE THE 'ROCK N' ROLL BALLET, DUE TO WEATHER CONCERNS.

Jason Noble Benefit - This Saturday

The Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts hosts the World Premiere of the documentary film "Burn to Shine 4: Louisville" this Saturday. "Burn to Shine" is a documentary series that showcases various city's local musical talent performing in buildings that are slated to be torn down. The Louisville edition details Lucky Pineapple's William Benton quest to preserve one of Clarksville's strangest houses. The film includes performances by Will Oldham, Parlour, Shipping News, Ultra Pulverize, Lucky Pineapple, and many more.

The event, which will be at the Kentucky Center's Bomhard Theatre, will also feature LIVE performances by Bonnie "Prince" Billy and the Cairo Gang, Liberation Prophecy, and Rachel Grimes (of the Rachels).

If that wasn't enough, proceeds from this event will benefit Jason Noble who is fighting cancer. Those who don't know Jason from his many Louisville indie bands (The Rachels, Rodan, Shipping News) may recognize him from Ear X-tacy. Jason doesn't have health insurance and undoubtedly would love to see you out there on Saturday!

Tickets are only $20 which is the cheapest you will ever pay for a movie world premiere / musical performance / benefit show at the Kentucky Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are general admission and still available.
