The second installment of the Crossover Series (Louisville bands mixing two genres of music right before your eyes) is Saturday June 23rd at Headliners with The Bottom Sop, Stagecoach Inferno, and Call Me Bronco and we have 10 pairs of tickets to give-a-way! Two enter just send an email or leave comment on our Facebook post with two genres or two local bands you would like to see in a crossover!
We'll pick the winners on Monday, and tickets will be available to pick up at our Tuesday Vinyl Nite at Galaxie Bar on June 12th with special guests Stagecoach Inferno and Mosquito! We are also giving away tickets to see Mosquito and Stagecoach Inferno at Poorcastle 2018!

37: Thanks for talking with us in the middle of your summer tour.

 The big hubbub in town is that your packing up after 15 years in (the band's hometown of) Bloomington and settling into your hometown, Louisville. We are happy to have you, what was deciding factor for heading south?

Sarah: Thank you! The biggest reason is family. We found a home that is within a mile and a half of my parents and my brother, Max. Coming in a close second for biggest reason is our friends. Since 2008 we have watched a steady stream of our close buddies move down to Louisville from Bloomington. We're following the siren song and joining what is quickly becoming the much-dreamed-about "friend island", but in Louisville rather than on an actual private island. Which is good, because import taxes can get out of hand quickly. 

37: 37FLOOD Writer Logan Nichols once told me that in high school as an aspiring musician he figured he would know if he made it if he was ever signed to Bloodshot Records. Around the 37FLOOD office we have been very impressed with Bloodshot these days. I have been loving the new Scott H. Biram album.  How are you enjoying being a part of the Bloodshot family? 

Sarah: We love being on Bloodshot Records. They sign bands they like, believe in, and want to support. And playing a Bloodshot event is never boring - we just did a show in Chicago with Andre Williams and he showed up in an iridescent purple suit and had the crowd (and us) in the palm of his hand.

37: You guys are known for coming up with creative projects and show themes, such as the 10th anniversary of  Who Will Survive and What Will Be Left of Them  at the Stanley Hotel (Stephen King’s inspiration for The Shining) and the As You Wish covers record where you let fans pick the songs. Do you have any wheels turning for upcoming projects? 

Sarah: As a matter of fact, the Stanley Hotel shows were such a blowout success (and so much fun) that we are doing it again this year. Also, we didn't see any ghosts this time so clearly we have to go back! By the time this runs all the info should be up on our website.

37: Do you have any thing special in mind for the June 7th show at Headliners?

Sarah: Yep. We're just going to stay in Louisville after the show. Forever. Gimmicky, I know.

37:  What are some of your favorite things that you will miss in Bloomington?

Sarah: It's hard to put into words. The entire band's history is in Bloomington; friends, basement-show houses, our favorite bartenders, favorite breakfast foods, night swimming in the quarries. It's a lot of things, and a lot of youthful things. 

37: What are some of your favorite things you'll be excited about in Louisville?

Sarah: I can't wait to be close to my family. Also I'm excited as hell about how Louisville seems to be getting better all the time. There's so much happening in the food scene, the music scene, and the revitalization of some downtown areas. Honestly, just generally stoked.

37: Good luck with the tour and the big move to city life, and we'll see you around town!

9th Zombie Attack Schedule Announced

The End is Nigh once again, on Aug. 29  the largest and longest running annual zombie walk in the region will bring thousands of undead into the streets for this totally free event: LOUISVILLE ZOMBIE ATTACK!

From 6 - 8 p.m. will be a movie and make up pre-party at The Back Door, located in Mid-City Mall.

At 8:29 p.m. the walk will begin in the Mid-City Mall parking lot and go north down Bardstown Road and Grindstead Drive (becomes Winter Ave) to Barret Ave.

From 9 p.m. to Midnight- there will be a street party on the 1000 block of Barret Ave. with a concert from Squeezebot and Vice Tricks and a costume contest on the main stage.

The Monkey Wrench will host performances from The Revenants, All Dead, Pelts, DJ Count Gronzy and DJ Rev. Spook from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m.

Barret Bar & Grill will host zombie bike polo with the Louisville Hardcourt Bike Polo Club on the Barret Bar hardcourt from 9 p.m. - 2 a.m.

Review: Mucca Pazza Headliners 7/7

Mucca Pazza came to Headliners on thursday night, they played the show with another Chicago band Schwinntonation who seemed to be very enthused to be there, proven by the musical lesson we received about intonation, which ended up being the definition for tonality. They used different parts from bikes to execute their soft looped sounds. It was a slow performance and was a strange lead up to the main event.
Mucca Pazza starts the show in the middle of the crowd, with their horns and hats running through the audience getting everyone ready for the party that was about to begin. The show is a mixture of performance art and raging birthday party, with cheerleaders and "the only marching band with a violinist" played two sets between which they spent some time at the bar or sauntered outside for a minute and when they had determined that the crowd was ready for it they came back for their second set.
This was my first Mucca Pazza show and I was amazed by the energy held by these 20+ people all captivating the audience. The dancing was contagious and it felt like the party could last for days but when it was over the band simply left the stage and went right out the side door, nothing special or crazy just simple and intimate.

Menomena this friday at Headliners 3/11

This friday brings Portland, OR rockers, Menomena to our fair city at Headliners. I first heard about Menomena in early 2007 when Friend and Foe was released and absorbed it for several months; it's still constantly in my rotation and the newer album Mines, while a bit more tame, is just what i needed!
Menomena also had a release in support of record store day 2010; a 7" split with the Helio Sequence (available now at their web store and i'm sure at the show this friday.)

Tickets are only 12 bucks at the door and the show starts at 9 pm so getcher ass out this friday and keep bands like this visiting Louisville! Local band Interstates (not a band to miss either...) supports the bill.

Kory's ♥ pour / Ear X-travaganza at Headliners!

Hello all! As 2010 goes, it's been a strange year for me... i've picked up and moved to Boston and then picked up and moved back! I enlisted the help of the great and powerful John King of Louisville is for Lovers fame as well as the brooding Gallery Singers. Our good friend Dylan also spent his time to make the site better and rounded things out while I was away. I do have to give a great thanks to these two guys and especially John for making this site come alive with near daily posts to keep the city's music minded folks informed. Thank you so much John!

I got back to town near the first of November and have never been happier to be somewhere in my life. I learned that I had a love for the people and the arts and entertainment in this town that I thought would fade but just became stronger...

I've seen a few shows since being back but none as powerful and touching as the ear X-travaganza this past weekend. Louisville's music store, ear x-tacy has been struggling this year with increasing technology and large stores that offer deep discounts on cds that drive sales away from the knowledgeable staff at Louisville's premiere record store. We've watched John Timmons pick up the store and move it down the road to a smaller, more manageable location with less room and lower rent. John recently called out to the city again, letting us know that the store was still struggling and while it's still up in the air as to what the store's going to do, some of our local artists got together and organized a show to support the store. We got to experience the powerful voice of a solo Scott Carney from Wax Fang as well as the beautiful Watson Twins, the always popular with the ladies as well as the gents, Ben Sollee, the every rocking Cabin and a special set with Jim James and Pat Hallahan of My Morning Jacket. I'm still in awe of the night and as a photographer, I usually get beat around a show and somewhat discouraged by folks blocking me out from trying to cover an event in still form. This night was very different... I met so many wonderful people that all seemed to part the seas of Louisville music fans to let a tall dude with a tiny jacket and a big camera through to document the artists.

Thank you Louisville, you don't know it but you gave a Louisville native that attempted escape a beautiful, soul inspiring welcome back! I sincerely hope we can keep ear x-tacy in our home and our lives... as much as a record store doesn't jive with the technology of mp3 players and cd's at best buy for 7.99... I think we can all appreciate the fact that we can have a place to learn from true music experts and a wonderful local music section to experience the soul of this grand city!
