Review: Black Birds of Paradise

Ever since I first heard Black Birds of Paradise cover Washington Phillips’ song “I Had a Good Father and Mother” on There is No One I wished they had more of a catalogue. Tonight marks the release of their first full length release, a DIY self-titled LP pressed by the drummer himself.

Since their only other track before now was the upbeat summer-y song “I Love You (But I Don’t Know Why)” on Gubbey’s Head Cleaner compilation, I was pleasantly surprised with the needle-drop opener “Future Man,” which is reminiscent of a Sergio Leone score with Scott Carney on Theremin. The heavy bass and steady ride imply a sinister, mischievous presence.
One of the things that sets Black Birds of Paradise aside from other young rock bands right off the bat is Regan Layman, who plays vibraphone, percussion, and sings backup. Throughout the whole album, her textures and frequencies add a depth to the sound that plays a large part in shaping the tune around them. “Exotica” is an instrumental track torn between Regan’s vibraphone solos and Nick Layman’s synth styles. Despite the song’s major key and more positive demeanor, there’s a tension between the two that is really special.
Right in the middle of the record, the entire band backs out for a quieter, more somber acoustic song titled “The Way, The Truth, The Light.” This only accentuates the band’s diversity by providing contrast to the following louder more aggressive “Pour a Drink.”

With their first release, Black Birds of Paradise have proved that they are capable of effortlessly playing a wide range of musical styles without compromising or betraying their vision. Let’s hope their second album has the same charm. Come out to the New Vintage tonight for the release party with Lady Pyramid and Murals.

Sani Hanks presents...

The Louisville music and arts scene has for a long time needed someone to come along and breathe into it new life... the time has come and our savior has arrived. Sani Hanks, younger brother of the great Tom Hanks has helped inspire a concert and arts show series to revive the Louisville scene and bring an "underground" to everyone who desires such. Join in this celebration/tribute to Sani for his inspiration and devotion to reviving unity amongst the Louisville culture and it's people. Who knows, if he's not too nervous, you may even get his autograph...

a little background info on Sani:
Sani Hanks (1960 - ) - the younger brother of Tom Hanks. For most of his life, Sani has lived in the shadow of his older, more successful brother and has struggled to make an acting career of his own. One main obstacle that he has tried to overcome is the fact that he is illiterate and has trouble writing. He also, on occasion suffers from extreme social anxiety.

His filmography to date includes:

"ER" (3 episodes)
- "Breach of Trust" (2007)
- "Collision" (2007)
- "Friends or Enemies" (2006)

"The Wire" (2 episodes)
- "Safety Threat" (2008)
- "Undercover" (2007)

"Eight Legged Freaks" (2002) [victim #2]

"3rd Rock from the Sun" (1 episode)
- "My Mother the Alien"

Show this Friday to include the Kodiaks, Murals, Dude Plays Sax and Anton Mink at Skull Alley. Art will also be displayed by Eddie Santigo, Frank Martinez, Joshua Vance and Makeshift Clothing. Doors are at 7 and bring a crisp (or crinkled) 5'er to get inside.

Murals this friday @ the BBC in Theatre Square

Locals Jacob Weaver (Guitar/Vocals) Evan Blum (Bass) Rob Monsma (Drums) form the band Murals and have been the subject of our blog a few times in the past. Their sound is beyond their years as these college kids seem to have been practicing in their basements since infancy. When we first saw them around a year ago, the polish was already there and they only needed a larger audience; sometimes this city tends to cover it's ears to new things.
Do yourselves a favor and open your ears this Friday; Murals play downtown at the BBC on Fourth Street. $5 cover (these guys deserve it!)

Murals Rudyard Kipling Performance

Quick little post to get you guys some photographs and mp3s of Murals kick ass performance at the Rudyard almost a week ago. Sorry to keep everyone waiting, while I don't mind paying for a place to host pictures, I like to find free places for music files.

I only have one more thing to say and that is there were far too few people at the show, these guys need to be playing to packed rooms, people will learn soon enough I guess.

Show me more pictures!!

It's been a few months since seeing the Murals play and that is a few months too long. If you haven't heard from these guys, come out and give them a listen tomorrow at the beautiful Rudyard Kipling at 9:30. A band that simply goes by the moniker "Goat" from the NYC will also play a set.

These guys are playing out more and more but this promises to be a good gig for sure!

Murals @ Rudyard Kipling May 4th

Murals (Jacob Weaver-Guitar/Vocals, Evan Blum-Bass, Rob Monsma-Drums) got together during their high school days. Playing songs such as Weezer's Island In the Sun and even played Oasis's Wonderwall for a school choir concert. Since then they have grown up, developed their own unique sound and even grew some beards. You can check them and their beards out at the Rudyard Kipling May 4th @ 730pm when they open for Barry Smith.

Listen:
Murals - Shapes
Murals - New Ground
