Samuel St. Samuel stands like a Kodiak bear covered in tattoos like the type of bad-news stereotype in an 80s action film. Standing up against the counter at Mag Bar -where he works part time- He seems like the type of old school Old Louisvillian you might want to cross the street to avoid, until you talk to him.
On the night we met in Old Louisville, criss-crossing the streets from Mag Bar to late night bodega and back, Samuel took the time to politely speak to anyone who ambled our way; there wasn't a single soul that night who wasn't given the same curtesy as anyone else. He was the same pleasant teddy bear I met years ago on the corner of 2nd and Magnolia under the bright red neon bar lights; when a mutual friend was getting bounced out of the bar amid threats and fists and a revolver. Samuel kept calm and leaned up against a brick wall, lit a cigarette and said "We chose this life, you and I. We didn't have to be here. A couple years ago I had a good paying job and gave it up to be right here."
And choose he did. For the last 8 years St. Samuel has been playing his special brand of cow punk filled with anger and vengeance wrapped up in drugs, and soaked in bourbon. There are two sides to St. Samuel, as the rough and grumble acoustic side, such as the brand new track he recorded just for us here:
And the wild and raucous side backed by his band Call Me Bronco, who just released a full length, Beating A Dead Bronco, on Rusty Knuckles Records in August. It could be easy to pigeonhole Call Me Bronco as tattooed pretty boys playing 'bad boy' for fashion appeal, but St. Samuel and company come by it honestly. During the filming of their latest music video, 4 a.m., there was a strict "No Cuts' rule, banning club patches on set.
Despite choosing this path instead of another, the rough and tumble nature of this culture weighs on him. Call Me Bronco is slated to record a new album this year, and the first album idea was scrapped due to the pain attached. "I doubt the average pastel wearing American has to deal with death as much as us." Speaking about the large amount of friends in this culture who die prematurely. "It's easier to not have to deal with it and move on, but then another one comes along and hits you in the face. And it's constant and you know it'll happen again. And the worst part is, it gets easier every time."
Despite not facing the brutal nature of the drug and booze Old Louisville punk scene head on, the new album is still filled with suicide, overdoses, and pain.
Call Me Bronco plays the 6th annual Groundhog Day Fest Friday, February 2nd, at Mag Bar with On The Bang, and GRLwood. Keeping with the theme of Bill Murray's Groundhog Day, the bands play the same set 3 times in a row, creating the same show 3 times... in a row. (9 sets total). Steve Albini's annual barbecue rock n roll party PRF BBQ is taking a detour out of chicago this year, and landing in several spots around louisville this weekend. The party kicks off this friday (starting at 3pm) at Mar Bar with many bands including the masterful American Lesions, and Saturday and Sunday at The Cure (starting at 2 pm) with many bands including Waxeater, trophy Wives, Knife The Symphony, plus a screening of Burn To Shine Louisville.
Sometimes there's an idea so good that it makes no sense at all. The idea for the Rubik's cube was invented and reinvented many times before it was great. On Friday Feb.28 it will be reinvented yet again, and possibly to perfection this time. The Rubik's Cube Party at Mag Bar is both an insane and genius idea, and just like the toy, the directions seem simple enough but promises to get complicated (possibly not until the morning after): come dressed in mismatched red/blue/yellow/green/orange/white clothing and switch clothing with people until you are all one color.
you hope it'll sneak by.. but this year Valentine's Day is FRIDAY; there's no escaping it this time, so why not embrace it the way we like to do in Louisville? put on that red and leave your coat in the car and get out there!

GLAM ROCK BALL @ Mag Bar
Beibelhauser Brothers @ BBC
Jeff The Brotherhood came to town last Sunday night at Mag Bar, the show started off with Louisville LoFi rockers K TRANZA and personally being new to the local scene I am more familiar with bands that play in California than someone from my own beautiful state, strange I know. Given this they reminded me of the youthfulness of Wavves and the smooth pop feel of Girls, I loved it.
Next up was the first Nashville act Cy Barkley, this dude rocks! Bringing back the soul of punk music, something strangely missing from the LoFi scene today. It is a feeling I miss, and one I hope is coming back (I never believed that punk was dead, it just needed some recovery time) good job Cy on representing all the bands I grew up with in a respectful way, you would make Minor Threat proud I’m sure.
JEFF The Brotherhood was the last to play, these guys have a great stage presence. I loved the theatrics they employ, such as back lighting and fog machines it made my night. When a band shows that they love performing by including different visuals on stage it makes me feel like they care that the audience enjoys every part of the show and I appreciate that. The new album We Are The Champions is phenomenal and certainly on my list of best albums this year. From the first song “Hey Friend” the guitar is right on; spacey and grandiose like all great guitar albums, these guys are here to impress the listener, and why not they come from a musical family their father is songwriter/producer Robert Ellis Orrall who also helped them start their record label Infinity Cats. Kudos to Mag Bar for the venue it was a great night.
Thanksgiving night! Woodrow on the radio at Mag Bar FREE 8pm-10pm. visit fam, get headache, go to bar, get plowed, talk to old high school crush who is in town from NYC visiting fam.
The UnFair, an eclectic gathering of over 20 local artists, is set for the weekend of October 1st through 3rd. The Magnolia Bar on the corner of S. 2nd St. and Magnolia Ave. in the heart of Old Louisville is home to this annual event. Many art forms will be on display from painting and photography to sculpture, jewelry and live glass blowing. The unique and often subversive flavor of the UnFair has made it a local favorite for 13 years.
Mag Bar is located @ 1398 S. 2nd St.Louisville, KY.
If your heading out tonite for the Motherlodge show at the RUD (see info below), you might as well stop by another Old Louisville institution after the show to keep the night going... from 10 to 3 am tonite our buddy Woodrow On The Radio will spining on the wheels of steel at the Mag Bar. it's a lotta music, and a lotta old louisville, and a little bit of booze.. you can't go wrong. update: Tamara Dearing is playing out tonite as well, at Vernon Club for F-N Art Launch Party. she's on at 10. $5.
It seems WOODROW ON THE RADIO is continuing his search for the perfect place to park his week night, real live version of his popular WFPK radio show, WOODY'S ROAD HOUSE. recent stops include MONKEY WRENCH and Vernon Lanes on thursdays, ending on New Years Eve. He is now giving The Mag Bar a spin on Monday Nights 9pm-3am. We can't think of a better place for the JUKE JOINT OF THE MIND than the home of THE BEST JUKE BOX IN TOWN. come out next Monday, March 8, and support ol' Woodrow, and maybe he'll stick around for awhile.
