Review: Starkiller Reunion

On December 21st the consolations aligned over Zanzabar to bring a perfect storm of post-psychedelic rock. It was probably not a coincidence that Starkiller's first show in about a decade happened on the first anniversary of the Mayan Prophecy of the end of the world; a subject front-man Dom (Dham) Cipola  covered in his new band The Phantom Family Halo.
Guitarist Christian Tonegawa  said the band practiced for just 3 days before the show, as Dom is currently living in New York, but no one could have guessed this based on the very solid performance of the band, as if they had been transported directly from a stage a decade ago when Starkiller reigned God King in the Louisville rock scene.
The band covered many of their best songs from Gravity and Just Her Light from their first 7 inch, to The Mary Bell from their first recordings,to the very brilliant Vampire Country sung by Christian Tonegawa. The band played a very amazing set of about 10 songs, but at about one song per year in exodus, it would have been nice to hear more. But surely someone had the foresight to record the show, so hopefully we won't have to wait another decade to hear them again.

Review: Bonnie "Prince" Billy & Phantom Family Halo EP "The Mindeater"

when I first heard that Will Oldham (Bonnie "Prince" Billy) and Dom Cipolla (Phantom Family Halo) were working on a record together, I thought it was such a clash of sound that it might not meld nicely. But the more I thought about it, it seemed odd that it hadn't happened sooner. The two most prolific song writers in Louisville that have been operating  and collaborating with other musicians for years had never crossed paths before. And although their sounds are very different from one another, the two do present an other worldly and ethereal quality both vocally and lyrically.
The first 2 tracks from the 'Mindeater' EP are acoustic and lean more in the Bonnie "Prince" Billy world, with departures into Dom's patented tremolo voice and erie keyboard chorus'. And even though they tend to be passing the spotlight back and forth to each other rather than melding together, the formula works, painting a vivid picture of men tortured by their own minds as well as the world around them (a theme both are familiar with). On the second track,  'Roki For Now', Will and Dom proclaim "my eyes were wide, full of sin. knock at the door, I'm a crazy man. I opened it up and you came in."
But it's the last two tracks that make this album a must have. The 3rd track is an explosive 8 minute cover of The Everly Brothers "Wonder If I Care As much" showing the full strength of this alliance with powerful psychedelic guitar and drum solos bleeding into a chorus of them both singing at full tilt that would indeed make the Everlys proud.
The EP ends with "Suddenly The Darkness", an infectiously catchy folk tale that takes us back to the Palace years. With warnings about sin and retribution and a chorus that will climb in your head and refuse to let go, you will be humming this song for weeks guaranteed: "when darkness comes your way, you know to stay away. you have got break your self free, it's the only way to be. you have to stay in the light, and say goodbye to the night.. Suddenly the darkness is coming for you!"
'The Mindeater' EP will be avialable in an edition of 1000 colored vinyl. If you are a fan of either of these artists, grab it fast.

Phantom Family Halo album out today

New album from Phantom Family Halo out today on Sophomore Lounge..
sophomore lounge has been putting out some good stuff lately, such as the new Giving Up album, and it seems PFH has joined the the list..
keeping in PFH manner, the press release is as cryptic as their music can be. here is what they said about the new album 'Music from Italian TV':
'In spite of its minimalistic appearance, is a most intricate light work which, in its scope and originality, defines its own aesthetic. The number of persons involved may vary. Although thirteen has been suggested as the optimum number, two would usually be referred to as a working couple (in any combination of sexes.) Within the community, many believe that a number larger than thirteen is unwieldy, citing unwieldy group dynamics and an unfair burden on the leadership. When this has grown too large to be manageable, it may split, or "hive". Most often utilizing electronic instruments or electronic processing of acoustic instruments, they typically create dense, unmoving harmonies and a stilled or "hovering" sense of time.'

Review: Star deth & white dwarfs at glassworks

it was a breezy saturday evening on the rooftop at Glassworks, it was a little chilly, and i was a little worried that it might keep the peeps away, but it didn't. i shouldn't have been worried, You can't stop Rock N Roll, especially when Phantom Family Halo is at the helm. they played a very affable psychedelic set, more "monoliths" than "black six", and very much worth the ticket price of $10. The second act was the mostly unknown but highly anticipated Stardeth & White Dwarfs from Oklahoma. honestly, after watching them unload earlier that day and noticing that they were teenagers, i was a little skeptical of the hype. most of what i've heard of them came in carefully crafted Press Releases, and a big enough enough paycheck can make anyone look like a rock God. and on top of that, the word LIPS was sprayed painted on most of their equipment; i asked one guy in the band about that, and he explained that Wayne Coyne was the uncle of one of band members, and pretty much helped his young nephew realize his dream of being a rock star. so, when they started i had no idea what to expect. but, they took the stage like they owed no favors to no one. they were tight and sprite and had the audience on their tippy toes. i was pleasantly surprised. honestly the Flaming Lips lineage was noticeable, sounding like a slightly heavier version of a "Clouds Taste Metallic" era Lips, complete with a Lips borrowed Light Bright explosion fashioned from PVC pipes, LED lights and plastic buckets. i was told later that Wayne Coyne has a warehouse filled with this type of stuff, and happily let the boys take some borrowed stock on the road with them. perhaps next time Stardeth comes through louisville we'll get a close up view of the "Christmas on Mars" film set.
all in all, the youngins held their own, and the Veterans held their Reign, and it was a Psychedelically fine evening on the rooftop.
(the next Glassworks Rooftop Music Event will be Friday 5/14 with The Mack, Saredren Wells, and Roadie. 8 pm, $5, 21+)
a louisville sunset while Phantom Family Halo soundchecks, and Sam Sneed saunters.
