Tonight: Satellite Twin Vinyl Release show

Louisville rockers Satellite Twin will be playing a Vinyl Release show at The New Vintage tonight (September 30th), with The Crosses and Black God. Satellite Twin released the vinyl EP Mechanical Hearts today and it will be available at the show.

9/17 We Have A Matt Bevin Problem Live Showcase (New Vintage & Zanzabar)

The anonymous creators of the very popular 44 track 'We Have a Bevin Problem' compilation released June 18th are throwing a multi-venue showcase this Saturday, September 17th 5pm-1am, at the New Vintage and Zanzabar with many acts from the comp (Andrew Rinehart, Ben Helm Music, Rebecca Williams, Ron Whitehead, Royal Bears, Derek LaFountain, The Uncommon Houseflies, Sean Sullivan, Tender Mercy and Heather Summers) as well as guest speakers Senator Gerald Neal, Representative Mary Lou Marsian, Vitalia Lanshima, and Professor Greg Leichty.

Review: Robbie Fulks at The New Vintage

We caught Fulks at the New Vintage in Louisville, KY, where he played an intimate set early and without an opening band. A woman seated in the front knew all the words, even the ones from his new album, Upland Stories. Though Fulks is a "Chicago-area alt-country genius," to quote Tina Fey, for this event, Fulks was accompanied by several Tennesseans-- including the bassist Todd Phillips and fiddler Shad Cobb, who both played on the Albini-produced record. 

The set began with Never Come Home, a new song relating the narrative of a man displaced from his recollected place back home with his family, who ruminates on the animosity encountered there. The album, described by NPR as "mongrel", does go lighter. "Try Leaving" was jokey, listing all the things a woman had tried to change him that did not include finally going away. Another that got a good crowd response was "Baby Rocked her Dolly," originally written by Merle Kilgore. Perhaps to keep an even keel, Fulks chose not to perform the high lonesome "America is a Hard Religion," which is a shame.

Fulks seemed to be a considerate showman, making space for each player to elaborate and play apart. Steel guitarist Pete Finney got some special acknowledgement and gave a shout out to his lovely partner Carol, who came in from Nashville with him. As a whole, the band seemed to have weathered their earlier performance for WFPK's Live Lunch admirably. Fulks worked his own merchandise booth, and stayed to visit with attendees, one of whom had him sign her copy.

On Friday 4/29 Robbie Fulks will be at the  New Vintage  supporting his new album Upland Stories,  just out on 4/1, recorded by Chicago's Steve Albini.

3/5 3.5 Sense Fest

On 3/5 between 2pm-2am the 3.5 Sense fest will take place at New Vintage and Zanzabar. this is a 'Half-Way' to 7 Seven Sense fest this summer. 7 Sense is one our most favorite music fests in Louisville and this 3.5 edition will raise money for the larger 7 edition this summer, as well as raise funds for the Boys and Girls Haven. $10

12/5 Unknown Hinson at New Vintage

The Unknown Hinson, also known as Stuart Daniel Baker, also known as the voice of Early Cuyler of the Squidbillies, and also known infamously as the short term guitarist for Billy Bob Thornton's Box Masters Band (before Thornton was run out of Canada for being a dick. see video below) will be at New Vintage on Dec. 5th and promises to be a worthwhile venture.

11/25 Seven Sense Thanksgiving Tribute

The Seven Sense Festival is throwing a Thanksgiving tribute at The New Vintage and Zanzabar on Nov.25th; 7PM, 21+, $10. price includes admission to both venues. Proceeds to benefit the Boy's and Girl's Haven.

8/22 Seven Sense Fest FREE

On Saturday August 22, on the block between New Vintage and Zanzabar (and also including inside these bars) on Preston street will be a multistage FREE music event to benefit the Boys and Girls Haven. The event will host over 40 regional bands including Scott Carney, Jonathan Glen Wood Ensemble (of Old Baby),  Alex Wright & Maven Down, Quiet Hollers, The Hot Wires, The Bottom Sop, Adventure, Brother Wolves, Black Birds of Paradise, Tall Squares, and Satellite Twin.

5/19 R. Ring & The Fervor @ New Vintage

R. Ring (Kelley Deal of The Breeders & Mike Montgomery of Ampline) and local champs The Fervor will be playing at The New Vintage with Shivering Timbers and Quailbones on April 19th. 

4/29 Steely Danish @ New Vintage

One of the more fascinating and beloved Louisville cover bands-operating sporadically over the last 5 years- known as the Steely Dan Cover Band or Steely Danish, fronted by guitar god Chris Rodahaffer, will be playing on April 29th at New Vintage. They tend to sell out so get there early or pick up tickets at Ticketfly. $8 9pm.

4/20 Kristeen Young & Black Birds Of Paradise at New Vintage

This monday at New Vintage Kristeen Young (think an American version of Diamanda Galas or maybe equal parts Tamara Dearing, Marilyn Manson, and Ziggy Stardust) will be playing with 37FLOOD favorites Black Birds of Paradise. Yes, it is on a monday, but it'll be quite a show, and you do need to celebrate 4/20 in style.

No Joke, this Saturday 80s punk wild-child and one time GG Allen backing band (as well as Libertarian party candidates) Antiseen will be playing at The New Vintage with Savage Master; both are known for theatrical stage shows.

This weekend the International Association for the study of Popular Music annual convention is in Louisville at UofL with talks by Lisa Foster (Guestroom Records), Carrie Neumeyer (Outskirts), Ryan Davis (Cropped Out), John King (Louisville Is For Lovers), Britt Walford (Slint), Joe Manning, and others. All talks are free to Louisville residents.
There will also be events around town including 1200, David Grubbs, and Wussy tonight Friday Feb. 20th, at New Vintage (Event Page) and a DJ night on Saturday at Decca with PlayPlay & Brit Faker.
